What is the definition of Universal Health Coverage (UHC)? Simply put, UHC means that all individuals and communities receive the health services they need without suffering financial hardship. (World Health Organization, 2021) There is nothing worse than an individual who needs medical attention refusing to be seen due to the looming medical bills that follow. Many people refuse help until that issue sends them to the emergency room. Even monthly medications are skipped to stretch two months to save money.

Hello all,

A particular focus on standard of care for the underserved population is to make sure that all individuals can afford insurance to receive proper health care. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was designed just for this specific reason. The goal of the ACA is to expand access to affordable and comprehensive health coverage, improve patient outcomes, and increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the health care delivery system. (National Association of Social Workers, 2016). If health care professionals, from CEOs to staff, work past unjust, racial, ethical, language, societal and money barriers, the affordability of health care would expand to all. The keep the rich richer and poor poorer statement, should be nipped in the bud. The focus should be on human life.

As of 2018, the geriatric population made up close to 16% of Americas and that number is rising. A challenge with the older generation is the education they need to maintain good health. Another fact about the older generation is that a fourth of this population live alone and are divorced. Which means financial securities are not there. Case in point, these are other reasons why medical attention is avoided. The large share of older adults also means that Social Security and Medicare expenditures will increase from a combined 8.7 percent of gross domestic product today to 11.8 percent by 2050. Policymakers can improve the outlook for the future by reducing current gaps in education, employment, and earnings among younger workers. (Mark Mather et al., 2019)
