Programs that provide employer-sponsored behavioral support and mental health services are part of an organization’s employee assistance program (EAP) (Berman et al., 2020, p. 308). These types of programs are an essential benefit to workers that are experiencing either personal or work-related difficulties. The objective behind any employee assistance program is to address pertinent issues that contribute to higher rates of presenteeism, absenteeism, job dissatisfaction, turnover rates, costs and lost productivity (Brooks & Ling, 2020). More than 75% of midsize to small companies and 97% of large companies currently offer EAP benefits to their employees (Brooks & Ling, 2020). Governmental organizations mirror these EAP availability rates (Brooks & Ling, 2020).

The COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting impact on employee mental health have escalated the importance of organizational employee assistance programs (Jones, 2021). According to the 2021 Kaiser Brief, the pandemic has increased substance abuse and suicidal thoughts among adults 18-24, increased anxiety and depressive disorders among women, and increased mental health disorders in adults who suffered adverse economic circumstances (Jones, 2021). Additionally, essential workers are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and new or increased substance abuse (Jones, 2021).

Employers must understand their employees’ emotional wellbeing needs and design comprehensive employee assistance programs to help address the negative side-effects mentioned earlier. Effectively implemented EAP’s have ease of access, maintain confidentiality, and focus on both the employee’s mental health needs and employer’s productivity needs (Brooks & Ling, 2020). The result of an effective program has positive effects on all stakeholders.

With these services there are a wide variety of issues that are taken care of for those who are seeking such help. “Employers usually pay for Employee Assistance Programs, and their services are often available not only to employees but also to employees’ immediate family members or to anyone living in employees’ homes. Employers have a vested interest in the ability of employees to work at or close to their full potential.” (Shrm, 2020) Taking into account the not only the wellbeing of the employee their family can take these services and use them.
